Herd guards

There is a growing market for neutered males to work on commercial sheep farms as herd guards against small predators. Losses to jackal and rooikat during the lambing season can be reduced by over 20%.

The herd guard alpacas learn to adopt the sheep as their family and protect them instinctively. As they feed with the sheep and have similar requirements for supplementation, vaccination and de-worming, alpacas are getting more popular than Anatolian sheep dogs. There are farmers that breed alpacas just to supply this market.
